The effect of ionizing radiation
The electron accelerator in the complex generates and speeds up electrons, converting them into ionizing radiation. Processing ensures the sterility of the product or reducing the number of pathogenic microorganisms to the permitted levels. The radiation passes through the product or material without generating intense heat, disrupting cellular processes such as sprouting, ripening, or growth of microbes, parasites, and insects.

Advantages of using complex with local radiation protection when replacing Co-60

The majority of food and agricultural products treated by irradiation are processed in facilities using gamma radiation from cobalt-60 as the source of ionizing radiation. Gamma irradiation is a simple, robust and well-established technology. However, as cobalt-60 might become more difficult to obtain in the future, it is necessary to have other technologies ready to ensure the application of irradiation to food over the long term. Electron beam and X-ray machines employ electricity to generate ionizing radiation.

• Complexes provide non-stop sterilization process when switching from Co-60 to an electron accelerator. Thus, the company provides a guarantee of continuous operation when replacing Co-60 with an electron accelerator, which helps to eliminate the risk of customer loss that is provided with sterilization services.

• After the service life of the Co-60 isotope, it is switched to sterilization only by our complex. Before designing the internal conveyor of the complex, the company analyzes the existing transport system operating at the facility. For full docking and integration, the company offers to place either a universal complex (for processing products with package sizes up to 1100x500x500mm), or a complex for processing products on pallets (for processing products with package sizes up to 1200x1200x1600mm).

• After replacing the Co-60 isotope with an electron accelerator complex, there is no need to purchase the Co-60 isotope every 6 years.
